Spring = Success

As the weather starts to get better for our spring golf season, the scores are dropping. The Cobra men’s golf team is looking forward to a successful season with one of the strongest schedules in school history. Qualifying has begun and low numbers have already been posted. To start the qualifying, freshman Ben Conroy fired a blistering 66 to take the lead. Senior Jimmy Gillam was back to his normal solid play, with a round of 68. The competition is stiff for the four available traveling squad spots that will be determined from these 18 hole qualifying rounds.

Along with 18 hole qualifying, we are also competing in 9 hole red tee matches where the short game is strongly emphasized. The overall winner from the 5 red tee matches will receive the final spot on the traveling squad. Playing from the red tees allows us to hit our tee shots around the green. We are then faced with all types of short game shots. This is great preparation for our first tournament of the season – the Golfweek Invitational in Orlando, FL, February 7-9. I would like to add that, in the red tee matches, two rounds of 30 were shot by freshmen Ben Conroy and Jake Murphy.

Also, many thanks to the participants in the raffle fundraiser. It was a great success and has allowed us to afford much needed amenities.

Stay tuned for my next entry!

  1. you know the entire Coker campus has high hopes for the Coker golf team. And, I know you guys are working hard. I saw Diego coming back from the course in the pouring rain. He told it is never too wet to practice.
