Coker Golf Team Prepares for Conference

The Coker Cobras are preparing for the 2012 Conference Carolinas Golf Championship. The tournament takes place April 22-24 at Woodlake Country Club in Vass, NC.

Last year, the Cobras finished in 2nd place by 10 shots to conference rival Queens University. The Cobras have never won a conference title since moving to the Conference Carolinas.

Seniors Diego Polo, from Guatemala City, Guatemala and Jared Crane from Greenville, South Carolina, will have their last chance to win a conference title. Their freshman year was the closest Coker has come to winning a conference title, losing by 2 shots to Barton College.

After being ranked 5th in the preseason rankings, the Cobras are looking to use this ranking as motivation for a 1st place finish. With no tournament titles this year, the Cobras are looking for a victory at the right time, and hopefully extending their season to the Regional tournament in May.

The Mental Toughness of Qualifying

To compete in a college golf tournament you have to earn your spot. On the Coker men's golf team there are 10 members. There are only 5 spots available for each tournament which means players have to go through a mentally challenging qualifying experience.

Qualifying takes up the teams weekend because throughout the week there is not enough daylight to complete 18 holes. While some students are letting loose and relaxing, others are going head to head against friends and teammates to try and earn a spot on the traveling squad. There are no friends once the first tee shot is hit in qualifying. Everyone is trying to earn a spot which adds suspense all the way until the final shot.

72 holes of golf determined the traveling squad for the first tournament of the 2012 Spring season. After 72 holes the scores were close, but the top 5 had separated themselves from the field. Traveling to Savannah, GA for the AASU Pirate Invitational are Josh Clay (OH), Chris Fuga (PA), Jake Murphy (NJ), Matt Kreider (OH), and Luke Coates (SC).

The tournament began yesterday February 27 which started with a rain delay until 2:30 p.m. It has been shortened from 54 holes to 27 holes because of the amount of rainfall.
